Music and Dementia

Some dementia patients continue to respond to music long after they have become unresponsive to other stimuli.  A new documentary, Alive Inside, examines this and will receive its debut this week in New York.

Here are some rough cuts from the documentary.

  1. With the recent shooting in Tucson of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, there was a lot of discussion in how musical memory and talent is stored and expressed in the brain versus language and other areas, with respect to her slow and grueling recovery.. I can very easily see how this would be a different avenue for the person with dementia and their caregivers.

  2. Music does seem to open a person up when other avenues have failed. It is so important for all of us.

  3. Thank you so much for posting the video clips. As a board-certified music therapist, I see people with dementia responding to music well everyday. I truly enjoy working with them!
